Review of The Dark Crystal (1982) by Chloe S — 27 Apr 2009
The character designs were impressive, the special effects were pretty good for the day, and the music was good. The script/writing was inconsistent (I think I know why, but they still could've worked on it more).
..some phrases sounded cool and "ancient" and others sounded way too modern for the setting, which really took away from the mood and believability. The story and character races were interesting, but why did they pick such a boring/annoying/weak main character to be the "hero"? If this is truly only animatronics, then that is really impressive, but I could have sworn I saw some scenes with humans in costume switching to the puppet movement in the next frame.
..I'm not too sure (Of course, I don't see a way around doing it with both for when it was made, but they shouldn't make bogus claims if it isn't pure animatronics). I'd like to see a behind-the-scenes- special on it/director's commentary.
I really wanted to love this, but the characters' lines/language nuances were so inconsistent, it became distracting! At least it's still better than 'Labyrinth'!
