Review of The Dark Crystal (1982) by Tim M — 22 Nov 2010
As a kid I drove my family to utter distraction with this movie. Every single time we would go to rent movies I would always pick this one. Every single time my parents would be like 'are you sure?' Always sure. I have recently bought this on DVD and the magic is still there.
When I was little I was almost unconvinced that Jen was a puppet. He looked so real. Kira looks a little more puppet-like but Jen just seems like a kid with makeup on. So good.
The story itself is something very simple but the world is so lively. The mystics and the Skeksis are wonderful creations and damn are they still creepy looking.
It's a corny film story wise but the way the puppets interact with the world, especially Aughra ( I love her), makes it all so fantastic. It's also interesting to see Jim Henson do something much more darker than the muppets or even Labyrinth.
