I wish the film had done more that just skip stones across the surface of its story, both because I doubt it was all quite so easy and because doing so robs the moments likely designed to be most affecting of their power.

Still, the film's failings are no fault of Redmayne and Vikander who each earn their sure Oscar nominations.
