Review of The Danish Girl (2015) by Chris F — 06 Jan 2016
The Danish Girl is pure Oscar bait. From the way it is filmed, you can tell this is made for awards attention. For some awards, it should get attention. For others, it shouldn't. First lets start with two amazing performances from Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander.
Redmayne, in the more flashier role, gives an award worthy performance. In my opinion, this was better than his performance in The Theory of Everything. But Vikander steals the show in her role. She is a wonderful actress, and has delivered multiple Oscar worthy roles this year.
The story is a moving and touching one. It is very interesting. Now on to the negatives. The film seems at times to elegant and Oscar-baity. That is director Tom Hooper's fault. It seems too "perfect" for the subject matter, if you know what I mean.
Still, this is a great movie with two extraordinary performances.
