Review of The Damned United (2009) by Brook K — 23 Apr 2010
Michael Sheen's terrific performance as legendary British soccer coach Brian Clough highlights this excellent period look at English soccer in the late 60's-early 70's. Timothy Spall, Colm Meaney and Jim Broadbent give their typical excellence in important supporting roles.
Many sports movies show us that one must fail before they can succeed, but in the Damned United, the immense scope of the failure and it's generally self-inflicted nature make for a standout among the genre.
But to point out one negative, I do think the film goes a little overboard in portraying Clough as fairly inept and uninvolved at many aspects of coaching, when he clearly was one of Britain's most successful managers.
