Review of The Dam Busters (1955) by Andrew B — 12 Aug 2008
Dr Barnes Wallis was possessed with a seemingly crazy idea, the creation of the bouncing bomb, designed to destroy the Ruhr dams and paralyse the enemy's industrial nerve centre. He fought persistent scepticism and disbelief that such a feat was possible. Through the matchless skill, determination and courage of R.A.F. Wing Commander Guy Gibson and his squadron, the mission succeeded.
This is a true story and it is very inspiring, and stories like this about the war make me appreciate what our forefathers did for us to give us the freedom we have today. The mission from today's perspective can only be described as one concept of brilliant inspiration. Although the mission and the true story are great, this film does feel a little dull, but back in the 50's I bet people loved going to see this as the special effects do look quite good. They could do with making a re-make of this film even though I don't normally like re-makes. Also I have a feeling George Lucas watched this film before he made 'A New Hope', because the scene's of the bomber's lining up to blow up the dams feels very much like the bit in the first Star Wars film when Luke has to go down the gully and aim for a small target, the two scenes are almost identical. Overall the story is great it just lacks a little drive..
