Review of The Curse of the Werewolf (1961) by Louis D — 22 Oct 2007
Hammer studios only venture into werewolf territory is a good one. But truth be told it left me wanting more. I think they could have done a great series of "wolfman" films like they did to the Frankenstein, Dracula and Mummy films.
One thing that really sets this film apart from the rest of the Werewolf mythos is how Leon came to be a Werewolf. He wasnt biten by one. His father , a beggar, was held a prisoner by a very sadistic Count. Were treated like an animal he slowly becomes primal and animalistic, being feed bones and scrap by a mute woman servant. Until one day the mute woman fights of the advances of the sadistic count...only to be thrown into the same jail cell as the now very animalistic begger, who then rapes the poor mute.
Impregnated with the beggers child the woman after taking revenge on the Count flees to the woods were she too lives like an animal, feeding of what ever ventures into her territory. The baby shre gives birth too now has the primative animal genes and when the moon is full......
Oliver Reed gives an exellent performance as the grown Leon. And the werewolf makeup is the best in any of the "wolfman" films!!
HAMMER HORROR RULES! NO BODY DOES GOTHIC HORROR BETTER!
