Review of The Curse of the Werewolf (1961) by Michael T — 01 May 2009
Hammer's take on the werewolf legend starring Oliver Reed as a young Spaniard who may have inherited a terrible curse. The werewolf FX are laughable compared to the later transformations in films like THE HOWLING or AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON, but at the time this was considered more realistic and scarier than the Lon Chaney Jr.
makeup in Universal's B&W THE WOLFMAN. This was one of Reed's first starring roles and he is good and would act in other Hammer productions in the future. Hammer was always able to do a lot with a small budget and created a 19th Century Spanish village to play this melowdrama out in rather than its usual "Central European" village.
A must-see for fans of Hammer horror.
