This movie that made Hammer Films, Curse of Frankenstein sees Peter Cushing give one of his greatest ever performances. Where James Whale and Universal had created classic movies based around the sympathy and pathos of the monster, Hammer went for a different approach.
Where Whale's Frankenstein was a misguided but good-hearted scientist, Fisher and Cushing's vision is of an utterly ruthless and amoral man, who is prepared to sacrifice anyone and anything in the pursuit of his scientific goals.
The monster itself is a mere cypher in this movie, which has largely dated well simply because its strength lies in the performance of its lead.
