Review of The Crying Game (1992) by Jessie V — 24 May 2009
Its infamous twist may forever be ruined for future viewers, but it actually matters very little in the context of the whole story. Unlike many of today's sudden plot turns, the entirety of this film's meaning doesn't rest on that single moment.
Instead, it serves only as a deeper facet in a richly complex tale of guilt-driven devotion. Well, there's actually more to it than guilt but that's part of what makes this wonderfully woven tapestry hold together so well.
It's the kind of movie that makes you fall in love with the art of storytelling again, the kind that inspires other storytellers (like myself) to better their craft. As well, its fascinating characters are played solidly by a strong cast and the direction is tight and sure-handed.
A definite highlight of the 90s and perhaps one of the greatest films ever made.
