Review of The Crying Game (1992) by Rachael H — 07 Mar 2012
A solid British film that covers a range of issues including gender, sexuality, race and terrorism. The partnership at the beginning at the movie is movie gold. There are scenes that seem purely comedic, that are very important or symbolic later on.
For the most part, Fergus is a likable guy and we are following his journey in the search for the woman Jody loved. Then Dil is introduced and is a brilliant character, without giving out any spoilers.
I knew the twist before I watched the movie but it didn't spoil my enjoyment at all. It's a really interesting film with an ending that is very poetic and I liked the use of the frog story! The bartender was a very lovable character and I liked how he intervened with their conversations.
I did begin to hate Fergus towards the end because he became so manipulating. I'm glad Dil got revenge in a way in the bed scene. The other characters like Jude were good enough for the time they had in the film but I think it was more about the importance of the Deil/Fergus relationship than the revenge Jude and co had planned for Fergus.
A good movie!
