Review of The Crowd (1928) by Timothy S — 14 Dec 2007
Simply the greatest and most perfect silent picture ever. This is a mind-shatteringly excellent film about the horrors of conformity and the painful bleakness of anonymity. The supremely talented James Murray is electric in his portrayal of an utterly ordinary man squashed by "modern" life.
It ends with a vague message of hope, which comes off as deliberately hollow. After all, how special is love if heartbreak is always waiting at the end?
