Review of The Crow (1994) by Mitch M — 04 Jan 2012
The Crow has surprising vision that I did not expect. Its dark, emotional, and entertaining and best of all, its made with pure style. It has a gothic tone to it, and a very creepy feel that is all the creepier when one realizes that Brandon Lee died on set in this movie.
The Crow is about a couple who are raped and murdered on Devil's Night (a holiday where the mob basically let all hell loose). Now the legend says that when you die that a crow comes down to take your spirit to the afterlife, but when something so bad happens the crow will take you back to earth to reset the wrongs. And that is exactly what happens. Eric (i think his name is) has come back from the dead to take revenge on those who raped and killed his wife. This is not a movie about a hero. This is simply a highly styled, gothic revenge flick that exceeded all my expectations. Not one moment in this movie is dull, and when it doesnt show Eric kicking people's asses, it has amazing cinemtatic shots of this cruel, gothic city. The cast bring alot of energy forward, especially Brandon Lee. He if perfect in this movie, and could not have done a better final performance. He really brings mood and personality to his character, which really improves the film. If he had not died, his career definatley would have had a bright future.
One could compare The Crow to films such as Kill Bill, Sin City, and Watchment, but I personally find it the best of the lot. It may not have quite the style of Kill Bill, but it has all the more emotion and heartfelt performances.
I summarize this review by saying The Crow is a dark and harrowing film with moving perfomances and a great cast. It is pure, stylish entertainment that will certainly entertain.
The Crow- 10/10.
