Review of The Crow (1994) by Stefan N — 22 Dec 2013
"The Crow" largely benefits from two things: its Director and its Art-Director. When we hear the narrator's voice-over on the city of Detroit, we know we are in for a treat. The rich, gothic setting and atmosphere engulf us- the fish has been lured by the bait! During the opening scenes, we see the tragedy that Eric Draven and his girlfriend, Shelly, have faced: murder.
The best part of the film is its capability to grasp our emotions. Brandon Lee makes the role his own. If his career continued in this path, he would have been holding an Oscar eventually. The action scenes are exciting and funny.
The only reason I "forgot" to add a star was because I feel this movie was not realistic enough. The thugs are so annoying and childish for no reason. They burn buildings for no profit. Maybe I'm over thinking it because I love this movie.
The Director clearly captures the emotion and feel of this movie. It is almost depressing yet on the other hand entertaining. I would say this movie is watchable just because of the dark setting and mood.
However, with all the acting and directing, it is phenomenal.
