Review of The Croods (2013) by Spencer K — 20 Jan 2014
The Croods was a surprisingly really good animated film. While it may not be near as good as some of the other animated films out there, is was a surprisingly good movie. When this was first released into theaters, I sort of dismissed it as a lame, unfunny cash grab.
But seeing it now, I can say that it is the opposite of that. It's a well thought out, often hilarious, and a very fun film. The animation is beautiful, the directing is great, the voice over and acting is really good, the script is intelligent, and it's a fast paced, fun, hilarious, entertaining, adventure that is very well worth a watch.
I'll start off first with the acting. Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone, Ryan Reynolds, Catherine Keener, Cloris Leechman and Clark Duke all give very good performances as their animated characters that they portray.
It was entertaining voice over and you could tell the actors were having fun voicing these characters. You could tell they were interested in doing the film, and not just there for the pay check. They all brought a sense of enthusiasm to their role, which is a huge props to all of them.
The next great thing about the movie is the animation. It's jaw-droppingly beautiful to look at and a real eye opener. If you walked by this movie playing on a tv, you would most likely stop to look at it is grabs your attention and keeps you watching.
The animation is truly beautiful, and it shows how amazingly technology and visuals have evolved (haha, had to) to now. I loved the look of the movie and watching it on Blu-Ray looked fabulous. I recommend seeing this on your HD-TV at home, because it's movies like this make it worth having that high definition.
The directing by Chris Sanders and Kirk De Micco is also really great, too. These directors do a really amazing job at immersing you into this world of the prehistoric era, and all of the interesting animals, and the beautiful setting and nature that surrounds it.
And having the talented directors at helm here, they really immersed you into this amazing world of the prehistoric age and actually made you feel like you were there with these characters. Also, the script is really intelligent, hilarious and full of witty dialogue.
When the characters would talk to each other, the dialogue was often very hilarious and extremely sharp and witty. It was clever and so hilarious. And most of the jokes really worked and were very hilarious.
Some of the jokes did fall flat sometimes, but most of them did work and were very funny. The dialogue is clever and the jokes very witty and hilarious. A very, very funny and intelligent script that worked very well with the movie.
I also loved the setting of the film in the prehistoric era. The lush environment, the huge animals was a nice new step for a movie that we haven't seen in a film for a while, and it was a fresh new idea for a film.
While it may not be the best animated film, and some jokes fell flat, The Croods is a surprisingly very hilarious, clever, witty, entertaining, fun, exciting, adventure that the whole family will love.
Filled with beautiful animation, a smart script, immersive direction, nice voice over acting, and a fun, fast paced adventure that is very recommended.
