Review of The Crazies (1973) by Tom F — 22 Jul 2007
Just saw this one, enjoyed it alot. Made on a zero budget when Romero was still making commercials in his home town of Pittsburgh, this is not as good as the Dead films, but has alot of very relevant things to say, especially in the current climate of suspicion and the threat of chemical warfare.
The low budget is made up for by the usual jet black satire of Romero at his best. Scenes where the audience will comment 'what the hell?' is what makes his films stand out from other exploitation type movies of that time.
When the priest who realises he has the virus sets fire to himself,it is a direct reference to the image of the monk[priest?] who burnt himself during the vietnam war. I only know about it coz its the cover of Rage Against The Machine's first album!.
Watch this one..
