Review of The Cowboys (1972) by Vicki D — 12 Oct 2009
There's a lot to like here. The Duke gives a strong performance and Bruce Dern is very effective as a nasty villain. Roscoe Lee Browne's distinguished presence adds quite a bit to the tone of the film, as well.
But the heart of the film is found in the exploration of father/son relationships and a boy's journey into manhood. It's not always handled in the most subtle (or believable) fashion, but it really hits home because it is done with much care and sincerity.
Highly recommended.
