Review of The Countess (2009) by Mikael H — 18 Feb 2013
Yeah, that didn't work. This film is a bit of a mish-mash, trying to be too many things at once. Even the directing is uneven, with actors sometimes sounding way to contrived, as if they are reading cue cards rather than speaking lines (which becomes particularly jarring when Delpy speaks French, which she is clearly more fluent in than English (yes, I know she's French)).
While there are decent moments, those are fleeting and just drowns in the mediocre to down right weak rest of the film. The script and directing would have needed a serious overhaul to salvage this, which could have been salvaged - therein lies the sad part, this could have been a very compelling story.
