Review of The Counterfeiters (2007) by Betsy H — 22 Mar 2009
Brilliant film about a concentration camp where they utilized the skills of many of the prisoners to counterfeit the British Pound and the American Dollar. Given that these prisoners were treated far better than the typical concentration camp victim you do not have as much of the deep emotion you might expected of a Holocaust film.
However, the filmmakers did a great job in making you see the emotion that these prisoners must have felt knowing how they were being treated and knowing what was going on outside their own compound. You also never lost site of what else was going on at the same time.
While the movie did move slow at times it seemed to actually help the storyline given the seriousness of the subject matter. It also offered some humanism to some of the Nazi characters which made the film much more real IMO.
Very well acted and well directed.
