Review of The Counterfeiters (2007) by Kapil D — 06 Apr 2009
Die Fälscher has an incredible story to tell about concentration camp prisoners trying out huge international crime to manipulate world economy. Ruzowitzky has done an incredible job directing and showcasing gritty realism in this WWII drama.
Don't be surprised if the lead player Salomon Sorowitsch (Karl Markovics) comes off unabashedly selfish for his own talents, but he also displays wide range of strength and companionship for his prison mates.
One of the more visually harsh films in camp genre, it is just disturbing to see the horrifying pain inflicted on these somewhat unfortnuately-priviledged Counterfeiters. At the same time you can't help to think about what unprivileged people in the camp must gone through in such disastrous times and conditions.
This is an engrossing story, and without taking much credit away from the director attempting this subject, he could have had 'deeper' character(s) study blend into the background and setting of the movie.
The last scene on the beach is put off and makes little sense, but a minor flaw in totality amongst other things. With that said, this movie a must watch.
