Review of The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989) by Sarah H — 24 Sep 2007
The cinematography in this stylish 80s morality tale is spectacular. I especially enjoyed the choices of color to give context to different scenes. Helen Mirren is impressive, as always. It's not for those who are squeamish or close minded. (Also, I wouldn't watch it if you have just quit smoking or started a diet due to the prevalence of food and smokes!).
While it can be visually shocking at times, this does not over power the plot. The acting is first rate and I highly recommend!
