I would not say this is my favorite movie, but there is no other that I admire more. It is often read as a political/class allegory, and I think that's the heart of the film, but it is also deeply concerned with the nature of aesthetics.

The engine of this movie is a seething rage and disgust that can barely be contained - yet the extreme control and sophistication with which it is executed belie the ferocity of the intent. It is sumptous and gorgeous in a way that movies have never been before or since, but each and every visual indulgence is balanced out by the visceral - a pound of real, bleeding flesh.

The result is probably the most powerful movie I've ever seen. Not for the squeamish.
