Greenaway is one of the greatest and most underrated of all film directors. This is not my favorite film he has done, but a total masterpiece nonetheless. There are so many visual nuances to absorb and fall in love with, the film becomes very quickly a grandiose and extravagant vision of a fantasy world, taking place almost entirely in the brilliantly designed restaurant set, where the vibrantly colored rooms seem to suggest more than a visual feast.
