Review of The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989) by Peter F — 21 Sep 2012
Greenaway's film shocked audiences a bit when originally released in 1989, for it contains a rather large amount of nudity, sex and grotesque imagery. This is a shame though, cause it masks how unique a film it truly is.
Playing out in a pseudo-fantasy-esque world, Greenaway seems to mine 17th-century revenge stories, theater, and A Clockwork Orange. The end result is a film that's haunting, bizarre, and often as gratuitous as the length of it's title.
To say it's not for everyone would be an understatement, but those looking for something different are very likely to find what they're looking for here.
