Review of The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989) by Mahdi E — 22 Feb 2012
1. "The characteristic of a human being is that - and this is very much in contrast with other animals - he doesn't know what to do with his shit. He is encumbered by his shit... Civilization means shit, cloaca maxima". Jacques Lacan.
2. "The word vomit arrests the vicariousness of disgust, it puts the thing in the mouth; it substitutes, but only for example, oral for anal. It is determined by the system of the beautiful, "the symbol of morality," as its other; it is then for philosophy, still, an elixir, even in the quintessence of its bad taste." Jacques Derrida.
3. "It all ends up as shit in the end." Albert Spica in The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover.
A Dark contemporary opera! a masterpiece of character-based, and plot-oriented cinema like "good, bad, ugly".
Albert character was well played, Lighting is the Greenway's signature forthcoming even in his very last movies "Nightwatching".
A good instance of minimalism tangled with symbolism and an ancestor of "Dogvile".
A point in case:
The volatile lighting at the death of the lover tells prior to the French Revolution - the time that fascinates Michel and becomes symbol of his death and become the manifest of the REVeng o REVoloution.
