Review of The Conversation (1974) by Bruno B — 03 Sep 2010
This is a brillant film, it just isn't entertaining.
This is a mood piece. The film goes very slow and by the end you can feel the paranoia of the main character, played by Gene Hackman. He is specialized in bugging people and plays the tortured genius in this film.
The entire film is based around a conversation that the lead character recorded. It is the main plot, but it has very little story. The better part of the 2 hours is filled exploring Gene Hackman's character. This is more interesting, but it takes the action out of the film.
As I said, this is a brilliant film. As a mood piece it succeeds completely, but it just doesn't entertain. I have a lot of respect for this film, but I have to admit that by the end of the film I was bored. This is art, not entertainement.
