Review of The Conversation (1974) by Morten H — 29 Apr 2008
You know...it's weird watching a movie about "technology" that is now 34 years old, because that technology is so ancient now. But, regardless, this FF Coppola film, while unique in its disturbing ways, never really captured my ultimate attention for more than a handful of minutes.
The magnitude of the ending was a let down and was more about the main characters self destruction than "the conversation" itself. It's really not even that good of a time piece if you're looking to see 70s life.
Dog Day Afternoon was much better in that regard. I agree with one reviewer, there was an excellent use of sound in this film. It fit the film. But, for the most part I think there were a number of holes in the plot, whether planned or not, and the film ended up being more of a character piece than anything else.
Although, it does make you think a fair amount about his past, which is somewhat genius on FFC's part because it's kind of how you might interpret a conversation you loosely heard.
