Review of The Constant Gardener (2005) by Pamela D — 15 Jul 2009
This film had an interesting premise and some thought provoking intrigue, However, it could have been done more intelligently.
The protagonists' motives for their idealism were not well developed. Drug companies ARE questionable, suspect, and controversial, but no more so than numerous other capitalist industries. The antagonists did not have to try to assassinate the protagonists. A discrediting rumor, or planting drugs on them would have been much simpler, cheaper, and more expedient, as they were relatively small time adversaries, Chances are that no action might have been an alternative as they were both bloody likely to get killed on their own.
I think the writer (or director depending on how much he changed the script) was pursuing an agenda of capturing the spirit of ruthlessness subscribed to by such corporate entities. He used an emotional and controversial setting as the backdrop in an attempt to draw audience attention and reaction.
