Review of The Conformist (1971) by Stephen C — 17 Mar 2008
While Bertoluccis later work such as The Last Emperor gains kudos.
Alot of his earky work is absolutley stunning.
This European film Noir is one of his best works most notably for Vittorio Storatos Camerawork which adds to the films tone and pace.
Although the film seems to be dealing with just Political Murder there is so much going on that the film grips from the start.
What helps the film also is the fact that Marcello the lead is so indifferent to the things going on around him that even though weshould despise his cowardice and his actions ,we cant help being drawn into his world by the end of the film.
A tough film to watch then ,but one film that evetually gives the viewer plenty of scope to think on what they have just witnessed.
