Review of The Conformist (1971) by Drew M — 13 Sep 2008
I've seen it twice and I find the film maddening. The subjective form of the narrative demands (flashbacks in FLASHBACKS!) that I watch the subtitles, but then I lose track of some of the wonderful form Bertolucci brings to it (particularly the use of architecture and Vittorio's cinematography).
I'm also always puzzled by the scene with Trintignant kissing the woman with the scar on her face saying "I'm crazy." Is that his wife, because it could be her doppelganger? Where did the scar come from?
