Review of The Conformist (1971) by Kevin N — 21 Aug 2009
A perfect looking film, gorgeously directed and lighted, shot and edited to a T. If Marcello Clerici isn't exactly a sympathetic or charismatic character, he is at the very least an interesting one.
This is the sotry of that man, confused by the world around him and even by himself, constantly searching for some kind of guiding light but finding none. There is a devilishly stylistic mix of sex and politics in Betolucci's film, and he seems bent on making them one and the same- lustful, out-of-body, heat of the moment acts which require a kind of beastly ferocity.
A collaborative, multi-national effort which must be seen more than once and which must be given absolute attention; its web is absorbing.
