Review of The Conformist (1971) by David M — 06 Jul 2012
Among the most beautifully composed films you are likely to ever see. Every frame is like a painting, something sorely lacking in most film today. It also tells a complex tale of alliance and identity, be it sexually or politically.
The film is marred by a perplexing lead performance, as well as a narrative that is anything but taut, functioning more as a character study. The European films of this time have a dreamy sort of haze about them, that creates a very pondering tone.
Its interesting to me how poorly done the scenes of violence are. It seems we are now so much more capable of violence, and less of the abilty to compose a scene and set a tone, and deal with complex ideas.
