Review of The Company You Keep (2012) by Stephan B — 26 Apr 2013
I am truly surprised to see that this stunning political thriller is getting such low ratings from the critical establishment in the USA. The film is brilliantly directed by Robert Redford. It has a compelling script and beautiful performances by Susan Sarandon and Shia LaBeuf. The film speaks truth to power and holds the audience to the edge of their seats till the end.
The film documents the struggle of civil rights activists who were part of 'The Weather Underground'- a peace movement fed-up with the brutality of the state and forced to take up an armed struggle as resistance to state violence. Cut to thirty years later and some of their identities are revealed. The young and eager journalist is the protagonist of the film who the viewer is meant to identify with and who cannot remain unaffected by what he has come to observe.
It boggles the mind how such a compelling film is not getting the accolades it deserves.
