Review of The Company of Wolves (1984) by Richard D — 06 Oct 2007
I was so disappointed by this - I found it overrated, self-indulgent twaddle, to be honest. It was pretentious, and insisted on making really obvious sub-freudian comments on fairy tales, and its convoluted structure of a story told within a dream confused and weakened the narrative.
The acting was pure theatre school, and the direction was pedestrian. I can't help thinking that this would suit a filmmaker who could actually direct like Svankmajer or Gilliam, and they might have made this a really interesting film, but this is just GCSE psychoanalysis for goths I'm afraid.
