Review of The Comedian (2016) by Pj B — 04 Feb 2017
The Comedian is a character study movie, which focus is on an aging insult comic who can't get out from under the shadow of a popular sitcom character he once played. The movie opens with him bludgeoning a heckler with a microphone and being sentenced to thirty days in jail and one hundred hours of community service.
As fun as that may sound, the movie is a boring chronicle of a 67 year old washed up comedian trying to reinvent himself. The jokes in his sets alone are so bad, you wonder how did he even have a career in the first place to lose.
The movie is a non-stop parade of aging comedians including Billy Crystal, JJ "Dynomite" Walker and Richard Belzer. It also answers that old age question, what ever happened to Charles Grodin.
The character doesn't really change much through out the duration of the movie, nor does his journey advance. It just plods along with flat jokes and barely any story. What Taylor Hackford made here can best be described as one of the comedians bits, "Making Poopy" a big stinking pile of it.
