Review of The Colossus of Rhodes (1961) by Andrew K — 14 Jun 2016
As far as the story goes, this is sort of a by-the-numbers sword and sandal film that would have been totally forgotten if it hadn't been for the fact that this is Sergio Leone's first billed film as director.
This has none of the style that characterized Leone's other films, and if you didn't know he had directed it you would have never guessed. However, the sets, costumes, and color is pretty amazing and fun to look at throughout the film.
The performances are shoddy and the dialogue is all dubbed, so it looks pretty silly. But if you're a Leone completionist it isn't all that bad of a watch. The Colossus of Rhodes has always been possibly my favorite of the seven wonders of the ancient world, so that's a plus as well!
