Review of The Color Purple (1985) by Jake W — 09 Aug 2009
Spielberg did great with this classic novel. Whoopi Goldberg gives a fantastic screen debut. I've never seen her in a dramatic role, but she was phenomenal. Now onto Oprah Winfrey. I can't say I like her television show or that I agree with many of her beliefs and ideals... but I can now say that she is a phenomenal scene-stealing actress. I don't remember who beat her in Best Supporting Actress in 1985, but Winfrey was robbed (Goldberg was also robbed of Actress in my opinion). It's crazy that Danny Glover didn't get nominated but that Margaret Avery did. Oh well.
A great great film. A classic that will stand the test of time.
