Review of The Color Purple (1985) by Evan S — 10 Oct 2009
It doesn't quite work on its own terms. Spielberg piles on the syrup and plays up the lighter moments in what is essentially a very dark and tragic tale. That said, ts probably the best looking of his films and features a host of terrific performances from the cast.
Less than the sum of its parts.
