Review of The Color Purple (1985) by Alex M — 28 Nov 2009
This film may be hours and hours long, but it is definately worth the watch. Steven Spielberg does a great job as director and the acting is superb (I have never seen Danny Glover play a role in which he isn't a gentle teddybear-like character, but he pulls off domestic abuser suspiciously well; Whoopi Goldberg is fantastically meek and downtrodden (something I would never have thought she could pull off), as Danny Glover's wife, but she comes into her own towards the end of the movie, with the help of the batshit crazy character played industrially well by Margeret Avery, and in so doing, brings Oprah Winfrey's character (played with a depth and range of which I wasn't aware she was capable) back from a whiteman-induced catatonic slump).
All in all, a beautifully told story of racial- and gender-based oppression, highlighting what adversities people can overcome if they have the strength and perseverance to do so :D.
