Review of The Color Purple (1985) by Jj M — 26 Apr 2012
It had it's challanges and utilised plenty of unconventional devices to make effective leeway on its sprawling narrative throughout but the ending was complete bolox. Over-sentimental pish-posh! Alice Walker must have been disgusted with the way her material was shat on so recklessly by such a 'masterful' director at the time.
Her's is a story based on truth and hardship in the American deep South. Spielberg's film does not portray a story as such but rather finds itself muddled between the idea of a story and a personalised project of praise-mongering and pretentious play-acting.
