Review of The Color Purple (1985) by Scott A — 15 Jun 2013
Yeah, over my little quest to every movie made, some may be shocked that such a film nut has not seen some bigger titles. This is one of them. And I'm a huge Spielberg fan as well...and this isn't his only film that I have yet to see!!!
Anyways, let's start off by writing two sentences I never ever thought I could or would type. Whoopi Goldberg is AMAZING in this. Oprah Winfrey is FANTASTIC in this. Seriously, I never would've guessed in a million years either could be so good.
And Danny Glover is good in this as well, but in a very bad way. He may play one of the meanest bastards ever on film. The way he treats his women is downright despicable. I'm so glad I saw this after the Lethal Weapon films, cause I will never see Glover is that likable ever again.
The story can be harsh to watch at times, and Whoopi does not live a great life, but at 150-some minutes, this movie flies by.
I felt even in such a depressing movie, the one big misstep the film does is give us this difficult film only to end with a super happy ending. Not that said ending didn't make me cry like a little girl, but it seemed to sappy for the film before that. The song number seemed way out of place as well.
This is a film that must be seen just so you can see proof that Whoopi and Oprah can be amazing actresses!
