Review of The Color Purple (1985) by Towannah L — 01 May 2009
This movie was hyped by the Academy and went away with nothing which was a complete and utter travesty because this is one of the most beautiful, touching, wonderful movies I have ever seen in my lifetime so far.
The performances are so amazing and make one feel for the characters. I felt Celie's (Whoopi Golberg) anguish and suffering, Mister's (Danny Glover) harshness, Sophia's (Oprah Winfrey) tough yet lovable presence, and Shug's (Margaret Avery) sassiness.
There are a lot of books that are adapted into movies and many do not get it right. This one does. Steven Spielberg has truly captured the essence of Alice Walker's 1982 novel. I highly recommend this movie to anyone who wants to be moved!
