Review of The Color of Money (1986) by Kevin D — 15 Oct 2010
The definitive pool movie! This movie was so fun, so brilliantly written and directed, and the performances were out of this world. Martin Scorsese was the perfect man to bring this sequel to the big screen.
His signatures of wild moving cameras and nonstop blasting soundtrack did this movie well. Paul Newman returned to the pool hall as the legendary Fast Eddie Felson. He still has it in this movie that takes place 25 years after the original.
Newman recruits a talented hotshot, Tom Cruise, hoping to turn him into a money making pool hustler. This process is a lot more work than is expected. The movie is fast, witty, and always on the move.
It doubles as not only pop entertainment, but as a movie that shows the passion for pool and it's also about human will and the strive to win. The opening scene and closing scene were both perfect.
Scorsese opens the film with a quote about 9 ball pool with smoke from a cigarette and pool chalk in the background. The movie ends even better in optimistic fashion. This is an involving, entertaining, and intelligent movie that runs the table on every other pool movie.
