Review of The Color of Money (1986) by Mitchell W — 18 Oct 2007
It really helps to see "The Hustler" because so many things in this picture carry a lot more weight once you know the baggage attached to them. Eddie Felson's guilt means more when you're familiar with Burt (George C.
Scott's character in "The Hustler"); the first time he breaks means a lot more when you know the details of his exile; it also means a lot more when Janelle tells Eddie how much she appreciates "character.
" It's still not a great picture - Eddie's redemption feels too much like a "Rocky"-type comeback - but the acting is excellent, and Scorsese does amazing work as well, crafting a picture that's still dynamic and engrossing in the most visceral way.
