Review of The Collector (1965) by Josh H — 24 Aug 2008
The Collector is a story of obsessive and possessive love, as alluring and sympathizing as it is creepy and perverse. Terence Stamp plays a butterfly collector who, tormented by years of ostracizing and humiliation, begins a new kind of "collection"--a human one.
He kidnaps the girl he's long worshipped from afar, an art student played efficiently by Samantha Eggar. By today's standards, we may find the obsessive-psycho-lover a bit of a well-known figure, but Stamp's character her is portrayed in a different light than expected.
You get a psychological sweep without going into details; there is no psychoanalysis of the protagonist, and you don't get a traditional ending (especially for what the censors would have ascribed for a 1965 film of this sort).
