Review of The Cobbler (2014) by Austin M — 15 May 2015
Critics always get Sandler wrong. This is an Indy / Art House style film and similar to some films from the 60's and 70's that were quirky and surprising, and in a wonderful way. It is not in the current Hollywood pablum over the top predicatable and unsatisfying narrativly empty style.
It isnt for younger kids but adults will enjoy it. Whether Sandler fans or not. I loved it but it was a little to heavy or odd for my 12 year old. Think Shaun of The Dead meets Punch Drunk Love. It is impressive that Sandler has the guts and commitment to doing movies like this although he gets slammed and when he does more traditional Sandler movies he also gets slammed.
This is a smart, funny, odd and ultimatly very warm movie. It will deliver surprise after surprise. Critics wake up. What is it exactly you want, more cookie cutter drivel? This is very well done. The bad reviews nearly kept me away and that is too bad.
I think this movie will grow in cult status. It is an odd one and a damn good one. Maybe not quite up to Big Lebowski standards but it is in that ballpark. And don't we need more like that?
