Review of The Cloverfield Paradox (2018) by Jay D — 07 Feb 2018
Another example of when the HYPE overshadows the actual product. (See: The Last Jedi).
I'm a huge fan of the Cloverfield universe (Cloververse) but this movie does too many things without being great in either direction. It could have been Interstellar. It could have been Event Horizon. It could have been Alien. Instead, its a little bit of all the BORING parts of those movies with the Cloverfield mystique slapped on it.
Do the events tie things together? Kinda sorta. It mentions how splitting atoms could POSSIBLY cause rifts from other dimensions - but, unlike 'Pacific Rim' - it doesn't bother explaining WHERE the monsters come from.
Did they come from the alternate universe that they landed in? Did the Other Earth have monsters on it? And, what about the alien invasion from '10 Cloverfield Lane?'.
At this point JJ Abrams is reveling too much in cool mystery marketing, and less on making a coherent movie. Kinda like how M. Night movies devolved from classics to schtick.
Great premise, below average execution. Thankfully, its free on Netflix :).
