Review of The Cloverfield Paradox (2018) by Matt L — 09 Feb 2018
Far from perfect The Cloverfield Paradox is an enjoyable ride. My rating may be rounded up a bit just because I love how it was released. After years of speculation and rumors of a third Cloverfield, Netflix announces it, premieres a trailer and releases it. All within a few hours. No month long, massively expensive PR blitz, a fun Sci-Fi blockbuster for the people right to their living rooms. Thank you Netflix.
The film itself is filled with some awesome special effects, mostly superb acting and a fun twist on a, now classic genre, space disaster film. There's body horror, suspense, heart and other dimensions. We get a few answers about the Cloverfield universe, while its mythology expands. We focus on the crew of a space station tasked with testing a dangerous solution to Earth's growing energy crisis. With Earth on the brink of a new world war our multinational crew of characters must work together to fix a botched experiment and get home without getting killed or killing each other. It's part Alien, The Thing, and Solaris all wrapped up in a few different dimensions and possibly timelines. A fun film that was a welcome surprise in substance and presentation.
