Review of The Client (1994) by Amanda . — 20 May 2008
There's a reason Susan Sarandon has been nominated for so many awards. She is without a doubt one of the best actresses to ever grace the silver screen. She's been nominated for five Academy Awards and won one.
She received four prestigious nominations for the Client alone (including an Academy Award nomination and a 1995 BAFTA for Best Actress win). Similarly, Tommy Lee Jones and Brad Renfro, as usual, give outstanding performances as well.
The acting in this movie is just stellar. The direction is exceptional as well, which is surprising considering it's directed by Joel Schumacher. Not that he hasn't had his fair share of decent films, it's just.
.. well... he directed Batman Forever and Batman & Robin, two of the worst movies of their kind ever produced. But that doesn't matter, because the Client is a really fun, fast-paced drama. It has pretty much everything you'd expect from a John Grisham story: political corruption, a client in danger, and a southern lawyer who has to fight against all odds to prove herself.
Okay, I make fun, but it is a really good movie that I strongly suggest watching if you're into that sort of movie. Also, although it's been a while, the movie did seem pretty true to the book, or at least my memory of the book.
