Review of The Class (2007) by Luisfelipe Z — 13 Sep 2009
What a refreshing change from the Hollywood treatment. Real students in a Parisian inner-city school are taught by a lovely, well-meaning teacher. What's slowly revealed is complex and subtle. The kids are harsh, but knowing, critics; the teacher is trying hard to help them, but it's a frustrating task.
He approaches a difficult task with a humanity that not all teachers have - I was willing the kids to appreciate him. Just as in real life, the classroom is dominated by a handful of kids while others just sit quietly and get through the year.
